Well it's official! Looks like there is more smarter people on this forum after all. We should end this thread on a vote...wait...we have already won. https://www.supramkv.com/threads/did-you-buy-a-23-in-manual-or-auto.17883/
That was a lot of pent up manual demand right there! I totally get it. I wanted one myself and was thinking why didn’t they offer it in 2022. I woulda bought one like Phil and BMWAF. Fast forward to 2026 and how hard it is to find an auto/ZF. There’s no doubt the manual was and still is the purest way to go. I’m just fcuking spoiled with mine matched with a loud ass exhaust that makes a decent argument for the damn things on track.

Since I can’t afford to have both, I’d go with the track ZF version if I were to do it again. If I were to buy one for in town only, Iā€˜d get the manual. Hindsight is 20/20. If they had that manual in 2022, I’d be driving one making the same argument as everyone else on here rowing through the gears ?

Whichever one y’all invested in, bought and own, that clearly the best ? one. I totally get it.

Carry on ?

wait, phil... you own a supra? since when?

I had the same similar experiences as you guys. I thought a manual is what I want. Auto only, that's stupid and then as soon as it was some manual available,I test drove an auto, loved it and said okay I'm going to buy a manual.
I would agree with most of your guys's responses though if I was going to use it on track use only then I would probably would have got us automatic. But because I drive on the street and love the purest back roads where I live nothing less than rolling your own. I think this forum is just all about the fun responses that people have been the memes is what make it great. The banter here is good

I'm happy for those that like the auto but I must admit to seeing Supras around since they were released and thinking "man they are nice, pity they're an auto though" As soon as I heard the manual version was coming I went straight down and organised a test drive in the only car that was available a second hand auto and immediately ordered mine.
I thought the auto was damn good and therefore felt the manual would be even more to my liking and thats the way it's turned out. Thats just me though. I saw a nice Cobra replica on the road the other day and naturally was a little bit excited then I heard it move off and the distinctive auto sound and thought "what a waste" and " who the hell would put an auto in one of those"
No right or wrong just preferences and perceptions.
Phil
Yeah, memes aside it should really just be a preference thing. It doesn't have to be all logical either- for me something with a supercharged V8 I would have to get in manual, no matter how good the auto is. I got my Supra before the manual option arrived, and It's the first auto sports car I've owned. Now that's it's tuned and running Xhp on the ZF it's plenty fun for me driving in manual shift mode. I like that it can go from chill comfort driving to brutally fast manual shifting in sport mode.

Personally I think the "manual only/performance cars should only be manual" people are pretty cringe. Really just drive your preference and stop being the vegans of car enthusiasts. No one likes older cars with automatic transmissions because they just sucked, now there are options. It would be nice to have all models have both options but I get why some car brands go with just high performance auto trans like the ZF variants, or of course dual clutch (or PDK) as good as they are now.

I remember when I used to read Hotrod magazines in the late 70's that there was a kit made in the US where you removed the torque converter and replaced it with a clutch assembly and so had a clutched auto transmission with the fast shifting. I always imagined how it would be to drive. Pull up at the lights, push the clutch in maybe select neutral like a manual and when you're ready to move off select drive and release the clutch like a manual then let the trans do the shifting. Never seemed to catch on even in the Hotrod world. maybe the gearing was wrong without the torque multiplication of the converter. Not sure.

Mark... that video shows nothing of how insanely fast the zf8 shifts on a 60k car, to compete with (minimal mods) a 150-250k super car. You know... What gave the brand "supra" it's legendary status.

And yet they chose the ZF for the win. A guy like me has got to pretend. Okay ?

I finally got to rent a Supra via Turo the past few days. At first I didn't care for the auto because the sport mode was soooo sluggish on the downshifts. But, after a while of driving it around, swapping to "manual" mode a few times and feeling those unbelievably quick shifts...then back to simple full auto in heavy traffic. Aggh. I must be getting old because I honestly think I want the auto now! It's not perfect, but those shifts are so smooth and fast why would I prefer the old fashioned rowing? I mean sure it's fun but...the experience I got with the auto just blew me away. At this point I honestly think if I get the manual it's only so I don't have to listen to people tell me it's not the manual.

For enjoying a modern transmission? Or for saying I don't want to listen to opinionated asshats on the internet? Present company excluded, of course.
All of the above, my boy.

Literally me, at your service. I'm even more cringe in real life.
The way I see it you either want to drive your car (manual) or just be a passenger holding the steering wheel (automatic).

If you prefer the later take these steps:
  1. Get a Tesla Plaid
  2. Put it in auto-pilot
  3. Set the destination to the closest gay bar ?ļøā€?

Trolling aside it's because of the auto owners that the manuals even came out. So, thank you guys. Especially the cool ones like @FLtrackdays - some of yall are alright.
