Would've been happy either way. I was told the waiting list at my local dealership was 10-12 months for MT. This was back in Oct '22. I was then notified a week later that they had a cancellation on an AT in the color and spec I wanted and I could skip the line. I'm not a very patient person I guess.
This is exactly my issue also and I also have 3 manual cars already.
I actually love this car with the automatic so not missing the manual.

Technically I bought both. A '21 first. Then a '23.
Which do you like better? The manual or the auto. We’ve had manuals all our life. Love them. But this ZF trans is so smooth. The rapid fire gear shifting up & down is a blast 🚀

OP doesn't seem like you're going to get a clear answer. People who own non 2023 are answering lol.
Good point, funny and true! But only for comparison reasons, did the 2023 auto change that much?

I bought the auto before a manual was ever announced and no regret. While I'm sure the manual is good and fun, it may only be so if you are keeping it relatively close to stock power levels. I can't imagine putting down the power that I'm producing right now with a manual. The auto with an xHP stage 3 trans tune is just ⚡. There is no right or wrong in this, it all depends on preference and the build you're going after. This is coming from a longtime manual owner.

Great that you're making good power and all, but this thread's title specifically says 2023, not 2020.

Jeez. I've done that for decades during rush hour with everyone fighting over an inch space. Did leave me with thoughts of wish I had AT all those years but rocked MT all my life. Obviously other reason was that until DCTs came in, every AT pretty much sucked. Supra took my AT virginity 😂
Now I'm rarely in traffic but have AT. life plays tricks on you.
FRS MT wasn't the greatest but for the power it made + lightweight was a great combo and I do miss it. Well surely left me with wish it had more power lol. Yet to try the 2.5L...

Would love to try the Supra MT for sure. Anyone?
The 2nd gen BRZ/86 has a 2.4L. Also, people call DCTs auto, but they really aren't autos. Torque converters are autos. The way DCTs work is closer to manual transmissions.

My take:

I waited and bought the A91-MT. Coming from an S2000, the shift action isn't as short or "bolt action like" (as some people say) as the S2000 shifter, but it's still a really good manual, IMO. It's smoother and still has a pretty short throw, and it doesn't feel overly rubbery and vague like most modern BMW shifters. Also, it's important to recognize it's a bigger, heavier car with a lot more torque. So, it needs to be built to hold up to that, which the S2000 trans isn't. The Supra's shifter is good and enjoyable to use. However, for me, this car is a street car and daily driver. Having the manual gives an extra level of interaction and enjoyment as a daily driver. If it was a track car, I think the 8HP is something that should seriously be considered. I mean, you can't really deny the success Jackie Ding had with his A90.

In fact, my S2000 is in the early stages of being built into a time attack car, and it's actually going to end up getting a BMW ZF 7 speed DCT swap, because it just makes a lot of sense for a high power track car. The stock transmission won't be able to hold the power, and while there are other manual and sequential options, the DCT swap has tons of benefits. It can hold a ton of power, it shifts really quickly, you don't have to take your hand off the steering wheel, maintenance is much less expensive vs sequentials needing to be rebuilt often, etc.... The 8HP has most of the same benefits, while just shifting a hair slower than the DCT.

While technically true, the driving experience is way closer to an auto. 💁‍♂️

I have driven ZF8 cars (G80/etc) and its great, but for me, the Supra was manual or nothing. I would have bought the Z otherwise.

I suspect this will be the last new manual car I will ever buy, and I wasn't missing that chance.

Had my 2020 auto for 2 years and loved it, went for a manual 23 because wanted to stay with the platform but be different! So far very happy with my decision, such an fun but easy manual to drive, makes it comfortable for daily driving in traffic, and whenever I wanna really drive an old school manual, I just take my dads car!

I got into an argument at work where I said most of the sales for 2023 were manuals since everyone was waiting for the option. My coworkers took the opposite view and thought only a tiny margin bought the manual. For the record I got the Manual in Red and I never considered the Auto. No judgements from me I just prefer the manual.
Your coworker is right though, at most it’s only 25% manuals produced for 2023.

After driving manuals for years I tried the auto and loved it. Ended up going with that. At an HPDE event I went to a couple weeks ago there was another Supra in my group and he had a blue manual. We swapped seats and honestly I still preferred the auto...

The manual is probably more fun casually driving but in a performance setting I felt great driving the auto with the paddles. At Watkins glen the track/gearing in the manual means you're stuck in 4th for 80% of it so you're not shifting as much as you might think.

I have a six speed MT turbocharged FRS with a few extra goodies, and I have to say The ZF8 is the first AT that I actually like and have fun driving. 90% of my cars were manual. I will be putting my 23Supra on the track just like my FRS.

I wished the manual Supra had a mechanical EBrake.
