To keep this thread from getting too serious, here's a true story of my hot tempered wife:

At the end of a wild night in downtown Austin, my wife and I were walking a busy street when we saw a flashy C7 convertible blasting annoying music, driven by two trust-fund looking bros. It was 2 a.m., the bars were emptying, it was super crowded, and the noise was irritating my drunk wife (she being Korean has a bit of a temper). She shouted at them in the intersection, "Think you're cool in your loud Corvette? Bet it’s not even manual!" She stormed to the car, peeked inside, and yelled, "Ha! It’s an automatic! You got a small dick! Automatic, small dick! Automatic, small dick!" chanting it over, and over, at the top of her lungs. Dozens of bystanders roared with laughter, pointing at the bros, trapped in traffic with no escape. One of the craziest moments in the 9 years we've been together ??

AI-Generated image for illustrative purposes as I lack the talent to MANUALLY make such an image. (see what I did there ;) )

I immediately went out and got a manual after seeing this post ?

It's OK. Along with your other comments, this just confirms you have never actually been a manual driver. In my twenty years of being a manual driver I don't think I have ever been worried about being in traffic. Even in gridlock, I don't ever recall thinking, damn.. I wish I was in an auto.

It's okay bro. Some hold outs still rode horses well into the 1900's, saying "I don't ever recall thinking, damn, I wish I was in a car".

You can't stop driving a manual now - what would your personality be if you did?

It never ceases to amaze me how reasoned responses are responded to with personal attacks.. albeit a rather sheepish one in this case. This doesn't change facts and does nothing to further debate, but go you.

Not really. The fewer people drive manuals, the fewer they will produce. Not sure why automatic drivers don't see that driving a car that automatically changes its gears is just moving one step closer to a car that automatically drives you around. ?ā€ā™‚

Lol what are you telling me for? Out of the 7 cars i've owned, 6 are/were manual. Woulda been 7/7 but i really liked the 4runner.
Like i said, the ev is the enemy.

In any case, this is all Toyota's fault for releasing an automatic sportscar. I wonder how many of you would still be in a Supra if this wasn't the case?

I mean, imagine Toyota were actually brave enough to release the car with a manual transmission only.. you know, like Honda does with their Type R. It still would've sold like hotcakes - I would've bought one years earlier! - and the GR street cred would've been palpable.

Manual Transmission is Gazoo Racing. Now that's marketing I could get behind.

Instead, Toyota has whacked GR (Sport) badges on Landcruisers and has even released the GR Corolla in an automatic too. ?

But enough of this pettiness.. it's now time to be serious.

Lets all take a moment to reflect and think about how the shitty GR Corolla forums will now also be flooded by invalids; those scared of driving in traffic; those that can't actually drive a manual (but won't admit it, of course); those who have had lots of manuals before but are now ready to have an automatic.. and last but not least, those wanting to go just a few tenths faster than the exact same car, but a) don't seem to realise that they aren't actually faster - the transmission is; and b) that much faster cars *cough* EVs *cough* already exist for this purpose.. and that these EVs even come in their preffered transmission!

That was me. I woulda bought a manual from all the hype I was taught and grew up with had Toyota come out with a MT the 1st year out. It kept me on the sidelines not buying anything. Finally said screw it when I found out the wife liked em and wanted to get one. I bought a 2022 for ā€œusā€ and now turned the damn thing into a more track oriented car. Wasn’t my intent and we’ve always looked for manual cars. Even had a BMW X5 manual made to order when the kids were little.

It’s crazy because I thought I’d never want one. I didn’t care if the PDK was faster in a Porsche I was building online. All the car magazines & online said it wouldn’t be as good ?. For fuck’s sake, they had me fooled. Now I can focus on the track and just rip through the gears in any corner at any speed. This car doesn’t even hiccup when doing so. I woulda never thunk it. It’s just a Toyota ?… or so I thought. It’s brilliant what BMW & Toyota was able to put together at this price. Girl’s got game.

Both are great. I’d like to have a manual for in town and or a backup. But I’m now tainted with the experience of driving a modern automatic ? and McLovin ? every minute of it ? ? ?

I commend you for not giving up when some people are so incredibly married to their position. You and I are similar. I had more than 4 decades of only manual performance cars before trying this automatic. I love it every bit as you and for similar reasons. The way some people react to this you’d think we slept with their Mothers or something. It’s hilarious actually.

Now I’m really going to blow some minds. I retired this year and my wife is finishing one final year of teaching before she will also be retired. Guess what I’ll be doing as soon as she’s no longer working and I’ll have access to her Wrangler during the winter. Wait for it…….

I’ll be selling my current DD and picking up a, can you believe this, manual transmission GR86. That right, I’ll have both an automatic Supra AND a manual 86 and will enjoy driving the snot out of both. I guess the only manual and only automatic crowds will both think I’m an idiot now? ?

I’m waiting for the new Celica or MR2 to release for adding a manual fun car to the garage.

I’ll be watching those possibilities as well. The plan is a used 86 in case one of those cars (or something similar but as yet unknown) has a price/performance/fun/look combination that I can’t resist.
