“Engine Oil Pressure Too Low”

As I was driving home from the grocery store I got the “engine oil pressure too low” warning on my screen. Granted I was a mile from home and continued driving it anyway. I’m not sure where to go from here. When I got home I decided to pull my codes on bm3 app and this is what I got. I also cannot take my car to the dealership because my DME is unlocked. Any help is appreciated!

I suspect your oil pump has failed.

This would be covered under warranty, and (except in very specific circumstances that are probably not applicable to you) would not be caused by the tune.

You can either let the dealer handle this, or do a DIY oil pump replacement. I haven't checked in a while, but I believe the DIY route requires lowering/removal of the front subframe. It sounds dramatic, but it's easy with a beam adapter on a floor jack.

This can happen to any model year B58. It is a known issue amongst enthusiasts, but there's no service bulletin for it afaik.

//edit: I don't think it's NHTSA 21TA04 because we're also seeing camshaft codes, and I believe VANOS is controlled by oil pressure. That makes me think it's a serious mechanical concern.

This gives me PTSD because when I got that message on my car, my engine blew within minutes lmfao. Turns out the dealership didn't torque down the oil filter in the housing and I dumped 7 liters of oil in the span on minutes. Then my car shut down. Dealership denied responsibility. They quoted me 24k for a new engine. Got it rebuilt for 16k.

I'd say check your oil filter and make sure it's locked in place. Make sure it's torqued down to spec. Check for any leaks.

If you have a 2019-2021 chances are your car was recalled for "Potential Increased Braking Distance" or known as Safety Recall 21TA04 which is a recall that damages your oil/vacuum pump. If you already did this recall, then you have a 1 year time limit to get free replacement parts.

If you didn't do this recall, then chances are that's your problem.

If you already did the recall, and you didn't get replacement parts, and it's been over a year since you've done the DME update, then you're shit out of luck and will have to pay out of pocket. I would know, lmfao.

If this is the saga I recall, it wasn’t the dealership that didn’t tighten your oil filter. The filter was an aftermarket with an orange o-ring which pretty definitively proved the dealership was not where that oil change was performed. The factory o-ring used by Toyota and BMW is black.

Yes this story lmao, but the dealership also opt to not change my filter because my car only had 2.5k miles and they charged me for a full "oil change". Every other dealership was dumbfounded and said my milage doesn't matter and that they screwed me over. But what's done is done, my car is back on the road after that fiasco ?

I did that recall and it’s been well over a year since it was done. Just unsure where to go from here. I don’t want to do the oil pump myself and then it’s doesn’t solve the issue. Then I’m paying for a whole motor

If you find a video on how to replace. I’ve been searching since my car had this problem, no luck lol

I did that recall and it’s been well over a year since it was done. Just unsure where to go from here. I don’t want to do the oil pump myself and then it’s doesn’t solve the issue. Then I’m paying for a whole motor
Unless your garage is well equiped I don't think you'd even be able to change your oil pump by yourself. It requires the subframe to be dropped. Just had my oil pump replaced a couple of weeks ago. $590 for the pump and like a grand in labor fees.

You can try to bring your car to the dealership to have them diagnose it. Chances are it could be something simple like you're burning through factory 0w20 oil quickly. I know some models have oil consumption issues. Upgrade to 5w30 or 5w40 during your next oil change.

I have a lift and tools etc. it’ll just be my first “BMW” I’ll ever be working on. There also doesn’t seem to be a write up anywhere I can reference to do it myself. I just don’t wanna go to the dealer and they brick my ecu. I’ve heard of cases where people tell them not to plug in and they get their cars back inoperable.
Edit- I do already use 5w40 oil

I don't know if there's a typo in your claims, but if I remember correctly, if you didn't do the recall and you let your foot off the brake pedal too quickly, don't fully depress the brake pedal or didn't fully press the engine start button when starting the vehicle, you can potentially damage the pump.

I have a 2020 model, and I’ve already had the recall addressed. Since then, I haven’t experienced any issues with oil pump pressure or oil level readings. My car has gone through six oil changes using Liquimoly 0W20 and has recently switched to 5W30. It has never burned oil, and recent oil analysis results came back healthy. The car has performed well on both track days with 0W20 oil and during extensive backroad driving. with 59k miles.

In what context? Only the older ones had the breakable plastic piece in the oil pump, and if any MKVs were potentially affected (in the US), it was the earliest MY 2020s. Otherwise we all have the updated pump, and nothing to worry about.

This recall and potential issue ONLY affected the vacuum pump, not the engine oil pump. Big difference there.
